july 1998, first world youth games (wyg) were held in moscow - unexampled event in its idea and scale. the ideas of the word youth festival, that were presented for the public of young talents, strengthening of the friendship and mutual understanding of the youth from all continents found support of the international olympic committee, that strongly supported the games. moscow has confirmed its high status one more time by brilliantly managing all the organization problems that accompany sport events of such a level. more than 700 sportsmen from 131 countries came to wyg to compete in 15 sport disciplines. the program of wyg, planed for nine days, included sport disciplines that are popular among young people. they were: basketball, wrestling (free-style and graeco-roman), volleyball, handball, gymnastics (sports and callisthenics), judo, swimming, synchronous swimming, tennis, ping-pong, fencing and football. besides main sport disciplines the program of wyg included so-called demonstrational sports, that were presented by young men and women from 48 countries. mystic aquatlon, and cequsinkai-karate, kickboxing, paintball, golf, rock-climbing, arm-wrestling, ushu - that`s far not all the list. chess tournament also was in the program of the first wyg: 20 sportsmen younger than 17 (that`s the age limit for the participants) took part in the tournament, in the demonstrative performance kids competed with that time world champion anatoliy karpov. the competitions during wyg were held according to demands of the olympic charter and the rules of the international sport federations. highly qualified arbiters from all over the world judged young sportsmen of the wyg. sportsmen that won first places were presented with memorable gifts and were honored with corresponding hymn. for the winners there were prepared original prizes in russian style.
